Interior painting is part of most remodeling projects we do — and it's one of those things that looks simple until you try it and get an uneven finish, visible roller marks, or paint that peels in the bathroom six months later. Here's what actually separates a durable, clean paint job from one that fails in Alabama's climate.
Prep work is 70% of the result
The most common painting mistake is starting before the surface is ready. In Alabama homes, this means:
- Skim-coating drywall repairs. Patches that aren't skim-coated and sanded flat show through paint — especially with a sheen above flat. If you're patching and painting, the patch needs to be feathered out 12–18 inches and sanded smooth before primer.
- Sanding glossy surfaces. Paint doesn't bond well to a slick surface. Existing trim, doors, and walls with semi-gloss or gloss paint need to be lightly sanded before repainting or the new paint won't adhere properly.
- Caulking gaps and transitions. Every gap between trim and wall, between crown molding and ceiling, and between baseboard and floor should be caulked with paintable caulk before painting. This is what separates a professional result from a DIY result — the lines are clean because the gaps are filled.
Primer — never skip it in new construction or after repairs
New drywall is porous and absorbs paint unevenly — you'll see "flashing" (inconsistent sheen) if you skip primer on new or repaired drywall. Use a PVA drywall primer on new drywall. After a patch, spot-prime the repair before painting the whole wall. For major color changes (going from a dark color to white, or vice versa), a tinted primer in the direction of the new color reduces the number of finish coats required.
Sheen selection for Alabama rooms
Sheen affects both appearance and durability. In Alabama's humid climate:
- Flat or matte: Main living areas and ceilings. Flat paint hides surface imperfections better than any other sheen. Not washable — not appropriate for kitchens, bathrooms, or hallways with heavy traffic.
- Eggshell: Bedrooms and less-trafficked rooms where you want a slight sheen that's more washable than flat.
- Satin: Hallways, playrooms, and any room with moderate traffic. Washable, durable, and tolerates occasional scrubbing.
- Semi-gloss: Trim, doors, baseboards, crown molding, and cabinets. Semi-gloss is the standard for all trim work — it holds up to contact and cleaning better than lower sheens.
- High-gloss: Kitchen cabinets if you want a durable, wipe-clean surface. High-gloss shows every surface imperfection, so prep work is critical.
Kitchens and bathrooms — humidity and mold resistance
Alabama's high summer humidity makes moisture-resistant paint important in kitchens and bathrooms. Use a paint with built-in mold and mildew inhibitors (most major brands now include this in their kitchen and bath lines). Make sure the room has adequate exhaust ventilation — no amount of mold-resistant paint compensates for poor airflow in a bathroom with an undersized exhaust fan. We upgrade exhaust fans as part of most bathroom remodels for exactly this reason.
When painting is part of a larger remodel
We paint as the final phase of every remodeling project — after drywall, after trim installation, after tile, after flooring (with protection). Painting at the right phase prevents damage to other finishes and ensures a clean result. If you're planning a remodel that includes painting, coordinate it as part of the overall project scope rather than as a separate engagement after construction — it's less expensive and produces a better result.
