What's actually involved in load-bearing wall removal

A load-bearing wall carries a portion of the structural load from above — either the weight of the floor above it, the ceiling joists, or the roof rafters that bear on it. Removing that wall creates a span that the existing structure wasn't designed to handle without a replacement beam. The beam must be sized correctly for the span, the load it's carrying, and the post/column configuration at each end.

The full scope of a load-bearing wall removal includes:

• Structural assessment: Determining what the wall is carrying and identifying the load path to the foundation. This often involves looking at the framing in the attic or basement/crawl space.
• Beam engineering: Calculating the correct beam size for the span. For spans up to 10–12 feet, a laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beam is the most common solution. For longer spans, a steel I-beam may be required.
• Temporary shoring: Installing temporary walls on each side of the wall being removed to carry the load during construction. This is not optional — the structure above must be supported while the load path is being changed.
